Vila medieval de Monsaraz , conseguiu manter as suas características ao longo dos séculos. Um passeio a Monsaraz é também uma viagem no tempo, pois é um local único onde ainda se consegue encontrar a paz e a tranquilidade esquecidas pelos tempos modernos.

Marcada pela cal e pelo xisto, torna-se "Monsaraz Museu Aberto" todos os anos, durante o mês de Julho, oportunidade para conhecer os hábitos e costumes alentejanos no artesanato, na gastronomia e nos vários espectáculos culturais que aí têm lugar, incluindo a música, o teatro, a dança e exposições de artes plásticas.

No património de Monsaraz destacam-se o Castelo e a Torre de Menagem medievais, o edifício dos Antigos Paços da Audiência (séc. XIV/XVI) e a Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa (séc. XVI/XVII).

Considerada uma das mais antigas vilas de Portugal, Monsaraz regista indícios de povoamento desde tempos pré-históricos, sendo inicialmente um castro fortificado. A partir de então foi sendo sucessivamente ocupada até ao período de formação da nacionalidade, sendo conquistada pela primeira vez aos Muçulmanos em 1157.

Voltando ao domínio dos almôadas depois de D. Afonso Henriques ter sido derrotado em Badajoz, a povoação viria a ser reconquistada por D. Sancho II em 1232, que a doou à Ordem do Templo.

No entanto, o repovoamento cristão de Monsaraz só ia efectivar-se no reinado de Afonso III, quando o monarca lhe concedeu o primeiro foral, fixando os limites do concelho. Nos anos seguintes foi edificado o núcleo primitivo do castelo, incluindo a torre de menagem, a matriz e o tribunal gótico, cujo interior alberga o fresco de O Bom e o Mau Juiz . Ao longo do século XVI, e com a reforma manuelina do foral, a povoação foi crescendo, instituindo-se localmente uma Irmandade da Misericórdia.

Durante as Guerras de Restauração, devido à proximidade de Monsaraz com o Guadiana e a fronteira espanhola, a Coroa mandou edificar uma nova fortaleza em redor da vila, utilizando o sistema franco-holandês, ou de Vauban. O projecto da nova praça de armas foi desenhado pelos engenheiros franceses Nicolau de Langres e Jean Gillot (ESPANCA, 1975).

No Alentejo, e especialmente em Monsaraz encontrará excepcionais vinhos, comida requintada e inesquecíveis paisagens.

Medieval village of Monsaraz, managed to maintain its characteristics over the centuries. A walk to Monsaraz is also a journey through time, it is a unique place where you can still find peace and tranquility forgotten by modern times.

Marked by lime and the shale becomes "Monsaraz Open Museum" every year during the month of July, opportunity to learn the habits and customs of Alentejo in handicraft, food and various cultural performances that are taking place there, including the music, theater, dance and art exhibitions.

The assets of Monsaraz stand out from the castle and medieval castle keep, the building of the Old Town Hall Audience (XIV century / century) and the Church of Our Lady of the Lake (century XVI / XVII).

Considered one of the oldest towns in Portugal, Monsaraz recorded evidence of settlement since prehistoric times, and was initially a fortress fortified. From then was successively occupied by the period of formation of nationality, being conquered first the Muslims in 1157.

Returning to the field of Almohads after D. Afonso Henriques was defeated in Badajoz, the village would be conquered by King Sancho II in 1232, who donated it to the Order of the Temple.

However, the Christian repopulation of Monsaraz would only give effect to the reign of Alfonso III, when the king granted the first charter, establishing the boundaries of the county. In the following years was built the original nucleus of the castle, including the keep, the matrix and the court pointed out, which encloses the fresh Good and The Bad Judge. Throughout the sixteenth century, and the reform of the Manueline charter, the town was growing, instituting a local Brotherhood of Mercy.

During the Wars of Restoration, due to the proximity of Monsaraz with the Guadiana and the Spanish border, the Crown had built a new fortress around the town, using the Franco-Dutch system, or Vauban. The draft of the new place of arms was designed by French engineers Nicholas of Langres and Jean Gillot (ESPANCA, 1975).
